Royal Ascot Cricket Club v Boyne Hill CC BHCC U11 Colts on Fri 10 Aug 2012 at 6pm
Boyne Hill CC Lost by 6 wickets

Match report The U11s were knocked out at the quarter final stage of the Berkshire U11 League losing by 4 wickets to Ascot. With the match being played bang in the middle of the summer holidays, we lost a number of key players for the match and Lyle and James F had to make their U11 2012 debuts as U9s which was a big ask but they both should be proud of their displays. The match was played on a very small outfield and the pitch was very green with uneven bounce. We won the toss and decided to bat first and got off to a flying start, scoring 19 from the first 2 overs. However, whilst William looked in great form, getting to 13 off 7 balls, he managed to get himself out in the 3rd over, caught off a leading edge to a ball that could well have been left alone. After that we needed Amaan to make sure he got 25 runs and retired and we needed a couple of other batsmen to make double figures, but despite being on 70 after 10 overs, our innings fell away and 3 run outs in the middle of the innings for Amaan (23), Tom (5) and Alex (3) were a major disappointment and meant we struggled to bat out our overs and we were bowled out for 99 off 18 overs. If either William or Amaan had been able to make 25 and then come back in again we could have added another 20 runs which would have been very competitive score.

We needed to bowl tightly to defend this score on a small pitch and in reality we didn't do this well enough. As has been the case in our 3 other defeats this year, we bowled too many wides and no balls, giving 45 runs away which was always going to be costly. Ascot started their innings quickly scoring 35 off the first 5 overs, which meant we then had to bowl William and Amaan together to try to take wickets and stem the flow of runs. This they did really well initially, with Amaan taking 2 wickets in 2 balls at the end of his first over and then William bowled the Ascot captain in the next over to create pressure for the first time. However, our main 2 bowlers weren't able to take any more wickets, and whilst Ascot were lucky at times, scoring runs off edges from William that raced to the boundary, we also needed a little more discipline with William conceeding no balls from bouncers, that were bowled in frustration of the game slipping away, that flew over the batsmen head. Harry got our 4th wicket in the 13th over but we never managed to keep the scoring down and Ascot got past our score in the 17th over to progress to the semi final.

Man of the match was Tom Doarks for his absolute bravery as wicket keeper and when he was in the field. It was a very difficult wicket to keep wicket on as the ball was moving around a lot and the bounce was very variable and this resulted in Tom taking a lot of nasty blows especially when our fast bowlers were on. Tom has had an excellent season behind the stumps and should be really pleased with his development this year.
