Boyne Hill CC 1st XI v Chesham on Sat 28 Jul 2012 at 1300
Boyne Hill CC Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Boyne Hill stormed right back into contention for the division 2B title with a 5 wicket win over leaders Chesham.
On a flat Boyne Grove pitch Chesham won the toss electing to bat, after an ominous first couple of overs Andley Adams gained the crucial wicket of former England batsman Aftab Habib well caught in the gully. Andy Goddard(43) and Matt Rance (72) then put on a fine century partnership to put Chesham on top. Rance was in particularly impressive form playing some very attractive drives. Suliman Javed(1-36) then bowled a very accurate spell of off spin to stifle the run rate, and then the introduction of Sahan Wijesekera at the other end bought the breakthough with Goddard LBW sweeping. Rance then hit a full toss to midwicket and the innings never really recovered momentum as Saj Hussain and Adams bowled good 2nd spells picking up 3 wickets each. Chesham managed to bat the 52 overs out finishing on 226-9 which was 40 or 50 runs less than they threatened at one stage.
Chesham took the old ball but Boyne Hills reply got off to a flying start as Tom Mellor hit Rance for a 6 over extra cover 2nd ball of the innings and took 16 from the first over. James Pauffley played some fine shots too as Hill put on 45 before the new ball brought immediate dividends with Pauffley caught behind and then Rance picking up the key wicket of Muji Fernando sweeping to backwards square leg. The innings then stuttered as Hill slowed and Chris Royals picked up a couple of wickets. Wijesekara then joined Mellor in a key partnership. Wijesekeras left handedness helped disrupt the spinners lines and he launched a series of sublime shots all round the wicket in an innings of 62 from just 46 balls with just 2 runs not scored in boundaries. Mellor offered solid support at the other end and although Wijesekera was eventually caught at point the damage had largely been done. Hussain(19 not out) then finished the game with a couple of fine sweeps with Mellor left unbeaten on 88 as Boyne Hill won with over 4 overs to spare.
Hill took 20 points to Cheshams 12 and closed the gap at the top to 4 points. This week Boyne Hill are away at Bagshot.
