Boyne Hill CC 2nd XI v Royal Ascot 2 on Sat 21 May 2011 at 13:00
Boyne Hill CC Won by 38 runs
Match report
On a glorious sunny day, stand in skipper Preston started the day well by winning the toss and elected to bat. However that decision soon looked shaky as two wickets fell in the second over. Opening bowlers Saeed and Madabushi were bowling good lines so Burnett and Stewart did what was required with some sensible batting and steadied the ship. With the score on 63 Burnett was caught to a fine low down catch which triggered another mini collapse as Stewart and Brooke followed soon after. At 5-72 things were looking bleak but a partnership of over 50 between Butt and Preston again steadied the innings. Butt was run out by a direct hit from the boundary which brought Larkin to the crease and some powerful hitting including a lovely six over backward square leg which upped the scoring rate. Some clever bowling from Carr dismissed Larkin, which left Preston who scored a well deserved 50 to finish the innings with the tail. The innings closed on 183 in the 51st over which on a good pitch was well below par. But credit to Royal Ascot as they bowled good lines all day and made it very hard to score runs freely.
In reply, Royal Ascot lost opener Arup to a blistering Larkin yorker in the second over. However, that brought Wensley to the crease who looked capable of winning the match on his own as he played some lovely shots moving briskly to 21 before Webb had him caught behind in his first over. Farnborough then struck shortly afterwards to remove Mohain and left Royal Ascot on 3-49. Barter pulled a calf muscle and had to retire hurt before Farnborough struck again to make the score 4-58 but in effect 5-58. Carr and Feely dug in and started to build a useful partnership but a fine catch by Brooke off the bowling of Abraham ended Feely's good knock. Royal Ascot skipper Carr tried valiantly to rescue the match for his team but wickets continued to fall and the innings was finally closed when Saeed was run out by Stewart.
An overall good team performance with everyone contributing in some way and a well deserved win. Next week regular skipper Roberts is back to lead the team away at Stoke Green and hopefully another win in the pursuit of promotion.
